The Theme

For decades the Latin American region has been neglected in political and social science research and teaching. The continuing consolidation of the political science discipline in Latin America, as well as its internationalization, have shed light on past and present developments as much as on emerging trends in the region – from trade to integration, from social reform to human rights, from party politics to democratic transformation.

Contemporary political issues range from the rise of leftist and populist governments, to societal reconciliation and the rapprochement between Cuba and the United States. Environmental issues touch upon the question of how to cope with the region’s ever-growing middle class, while fluctuating commodity prices affect resource-rich economies, prompting questions of economic diversification. Furthermore, Latin America’s geopolitical alignment is concerned by a shifting global balance of power and its future political and socioeconomic development will depend on policy-making addressing, among other things, inequality and wealth distribution, participation and the inclusion of the region’s indigenous peoples, social movements and violence. Meanwhile policy innovation, such as Brazil’s Conditional Cash Transfer Programme and Ecuador’s Open Border Policy are winning converts worldwide.

Call for Papers
