Subject: Public consultation - Towards a Socially Responsible Canadian Trade Policy

The Center for Studies on Integration and Globalization (CEIM) organizes a public consultation on Canadian trade policy. At a time when trade agreements return to negotiations (eg. renegotiation of NAFTA, recent CETA signature) and when the government has shown intention of adopting more social responsibility policies, a strategic window opens to transform Canada's trade policy.

We therefore conduct a civil society survey on three proposed areas to make trade policy more socially responsible.

These areas are:

a) social clauses in trade agreements,

b) social conditionality of generalized system of preferences, and

c) banning on import of goods produced using forced labour or the worst forms of child labour.

Positions expressed during the consultations will be reported to the public via our website and through a publication. In addition, they will also be brought to the attention of the government since our report will be submitted to Employment and Social Development Canada.

We extend an invitation to all Canadians to participate in the consultations and to spread the word within their networks.

How you can participate:

1. Taking the online survey

2. Attending a public consultation meeting in person

Online survey consists of 8 questions on specific topics related to the three areas above mentioned. You will also find fact sheets on each topic presented. Access the questionnaire and take the survey here.

Consultation meetings will be a good opportunity to bring diverse civil society actors together. They will take place in September in five cities across Canada:

Montreal, September 14;

Ottawa, September 15;

Edmonton, September 20;

Vancouver, September 22;

Halifax, October 2 (date to be confirmed shortly).

These consultation sessions will allow for an in-depth discussion on the topics proposed in the survey while providing the opportunity for civil society to express their position. The results of these discussions will form the basis of our reflections and proposals that will be presented in our report. During the meetings, attendants will benefit from informative workshops on the three areas proposed.

Here is the itinerary of a meeting session:

9:45 am – 10:00 am         : Opening remarks

10:00 am - 12:00 pm        : Workshop on the three areas of discussion and questions from the public

1:00 pm - 1:30 pm            : Instructions on how discussion groups will be conducted

1:30 pm - 2:30 pm            : Focus groups on the three areas of discussion

2:45 pm - 3:15 pm            : Rapporteurs' reports on the positions taken during the discussion groups + short question period

3:15 pm - 4:15 pm            : Plenary session «Towards a socially responsible trade policy »

4:15 pm - 5:15 pm            : Closing cocktail

Registrations to attend the in-person consultation meetings are open via our website.

We hope to see you in large numbers and look forward to meeting you there!
